The comic run keeps going but the theology deepens here, and the joke stops being a joke somewhere around the second verse. Rose lets his brother’s voicemails do the philosophizing over a dry, clipped Rhodes-and-bass vamp that stays close to a deadpan mid-tempo lope, laying out his premise like a proof: ‘A message from Bob / is a message from God / if everything is one. / That’s not religion. / That’s arithmetic.’ The band works in a punchy 1970s studio-jazz frame, fuzz guitar answering back after each refrain, the rhythm section snapping shut on the closing lines so the silence lands like a held breath. The bridge is the centerpiece, a flat catalog of household omens (‘The refrigerator starts at two thirteen. / Information’) that builds to a quiet thesis: ‘Meaning is everywhere / once you lower the standard.’ It runs long at five and a half minutes, and the last solo pass tests your patience the way any good koan does, but the payoff is the glued-shut window and the phone ringing once before the hard cut, where the whole conceit finally bares its teeth. Closer to Zappa’s studio-jazz talking pieces than anything on his diarist records, this is Rose trusting you to sit with a strange idea, and it primes you for the two most ambitious things the record has left.
