The Only One
Three tracks in, PCBender introduces the album’s first real tension, and ‘The Only One’ is better positioned for it than it would be anywhere else. After two songs that largely open outward toward warmth and connection, this one turns inward to contradiction: the verse opens sparse and close, just voice and acoustic guitar, and then the drums and layered vocals hit and the whole thing opens up like a door kicked in. The chorus lands hard on ‘you tell me that you love me / then you show me that you hate me,’ the kind of plain-spoken lyric that only works when the music earns it, and here it does. The bridge pulls back just enough to let the outro breathe, and ‘still the only one, even when we fall apart’ sticks the way a good hook should. It has the same push-pull energy as Tom Petty working a classic rock radio format, and PCBender handles the dynamic shift with enough control that it never feels forced. Sitting at the album’s midpoint approach, it gives the record necessary weight without stalling it.
Lyrics
You say that I don't listen Can't hear a word you say Insensitive to what you're feeling And how I treat you is not okay
And then you tell me that you love me And then you show me that you hate me And you'd be better off without me Yes, ba-by. You're the only one (the only one)
Your silence burns just like an ember A quiet war behind your eyes Every word, a loaded question Every touch feels like goodbye
And then you tell me that you love me And then you show me that you hate me And you'd be better off without me Yes, ba-by. You're the only one (the only one)
Walking circles, lost in echoes Retracing steps we can't unwind Do we fight because we're breaking Or because we're still entwined
Maybe love was never simple Maybe pain was built to last Every wound, a fading symbol Of a future bound to crash
And then you tell me that you love me And then you show me that you hate me And you'd be better off without me Yes, ba-by. You're the only one (the only one)
Still the only one… Even when we fall apart Still the only one… Even when we break our hearts
