I'm Still Here
Rose opens with a mumbled false start on ‘I’m Old Now,’ and that small, deliberate stumble tells you exactly what kind of record this is: nothing performed, nothing smoothed over, just a man taking honest stock. The album holds that register for twelve tracks without ever feeling monotonous, because the tempo and weight keep shifting quietly underneath, from the brisk pulse of ‘I Know Exactly What This Is’ to the slower, heavier settle of ‘Full-Size Person’ and the near-hymnal close of ‘I’m Still Here.’ What Rose has built here is one of those rare records where the sequencing does real work, with ‘Some Things Just Stop’ and ‘Rooms Keep People’ arriving back-to-back in the middle like the album’s quiet center of gravity, and everything after them feeling earned rather than extended.
