The album’s strongest moment arrives at track four, and the sequencing earns it. ‘Free,’ ‘Law,’ and ‘Love’ have each argued their case with conviction; ‘God’ quiets down and goes deeper. The electric guitar intro carries real blues weight before the track opens into something closer to Springsteen at his most spacious, choral harmonies lifting the chorus hook into a room much larger than most indie rock can fill. At a deliberate pace, the tempo is unhurried, giving the final verse, ‘Only to notice how everything already shines,’ the space to land without being pushed. The lyric ‘I listen for the presence that moves in minor keys’ is the kind of line that earns its keep, and the song delivers on it. PCBender has always had a philosopher’s streak; this is where that instinct fully meets the music. A career-best, and the album’s center of gravity.
