Free

Free is an album built around the biggest questions a person can ask, and PCBender is serious enough about them to let the music slow down and breathe as the stakes rise. The opening title track comes in hard and progressive, but the album steadily decompresses through ‘Law,’ ‘Love,’ and into the twin peaks of ‘God’ and ‘Death,’ where the philosopher and the craftsman are operating in full alignment. ‘Sovereign’ closes the record with a seven-minute waltz that earns its length, landing the album on something close to earned peace rather than resolution. The one structural wrinkle is ‘Meaning,’ which arrives late in the sequence at a tempo that briefly re-energizes things but sits slightly outside the gravitational pull of what surrounds it; it’s a strong track that the sequencing doesn’t quite know what to do with. Still, this is PCBender delivering exactly what his persona promises: big themes, warm guitar tones, and songs built to last.
