Distance Not Safety

Distance Not Safety opens with ‘Cut Flowers’ in waltz time, a tender, minor-key meditation that tells you exactly what kind of band 4Castle wants to be: technically assured, emotionally direct, unafraid of a central metaphor. From there the album builds a convincing arc, climbing through the propulsive title track and the country-rock confidence of ‘Double Black Diamonds’ before ‘Belligerent’ and ‘Venus Syndrome’ push the tempo and the stakes to their breaking point. ‘Getting Through’ is the one moment where the album catches its breath a little too long, but a single measured step back in a ten-track run is easy to forgive. ‘Void of Intention’ closes things with shimmering resolve rather than a grand gesture, which turns out to be the right call: after the intensity of the back half, restraint reads as earned rather than deflating.
