Then There Was Nothing

PCBender has always known how to build a song from the ground up, and ‘Then There Was Nothing’ earns its seven-minute run time the hard way: by actually going somewhere. The shimmering, delay-soaked intro gives way to a chorus that hits like a wave breaking, distorted guitars and drums landing with the kind of cathartic weight you hear on the better end of classic rock radio. The lyric ‘she didn’t arrive, she was always there’ does real philosophical work without straining for it, and the C major key keeps the whole thing open and unguarded even as the arrangement thickens. A highlight that holds the room.

Lyrics

I walked along a misty pier The water dark, the sky unclear I almost missed her standing there Half-turned, with sea-salt in her hair She moved too close and touched my head “I’m Nothing,” she turned and said “I’ve been waiting, longing for you.” And strangely now I felt it too

I found a face I knew There was nothing left to do But dissolve into her force As if I had a choice I surrender to her always With a love that can not stay There is Me and there is Nothing And may it always be that way

Then there was Nothing-her voice in the air She didn’t arrive, she was always there She pulled me apart with a whisper, a glance And gave back a soul that had lost its chance Then there was Nothing-no fear, no disguise Just love in the dark and light in her eyes No questions, no reason, no need to explain Then there was Nothing-and Nothing remains

We woke when dawn begins to breathe She spoke in truths, she opened me No promises, no binding thread- Just moments blooming in my head She sang a name I used to wear Then let it vanish in the air She kissed me once, then stepped away- As if goodbye was how she’d stay

She didn’t stay, but stayed in me A quiet hum, a memory And even when she isn’t here- I know that she is always near

Then there was Nothing… Then there was Nothing… Then there was Nothing
