Maybe I Should

From The Messy Middle

Maybe I Should

The album’s third act is now in full swing, and ‘Maybe I Should’ keeps that momentum exactly where the sequence needs it. STAB turns social-media withdrawal into a proper pop-rock hook here, and the conceit earns its runtime. The opening is stripped and close-miked, just enough space for the lyric to breathe before the full kit crashes in around the 45-second mark and the song shifts from bedroom confession to something close to a Bangles-era anthem. At a brisk pace in a bright major key, the chorus has real momentum behind it, and the line ‘it’s a beautiful light and it’s easy to follow, even if the middle is a little bit hollow’ does double duty as both earworm and argument. Coming after ‘Not Picking Up’ established the album’s defiant register, this one gives that defiance a more rueful, self-aware edge, which is exactly the tonal calibration the final stretch needs before it turns toward resolution.

Lyrics

(hey...) (remember me?)

The screen is glowing on the nightstand over there And I can feel it calling through the cold night air "Just a quick check," says the voice in my head "See what you've missed while you were lying in bed" (just a peek) It would be so easy, it would be so fast To go back to the way things were in the past

It's a beautiful light and it's easy to follow Even if the middle is a little bit hollow I'm standing on the edge, I'm looking back in Maybe I should just check in

The convenience is tempting, the validation is sweet It's a warm, digital blanket for the cold and the heat I'm missing the jokes and I'm missing the news And I'm starting to think I have something to lose (do I?) (maybe I do) Is it really that bad to just peek through the door

It's a beautiful light and it's easy to follow Even if the middle is a little bit hollow I'm standing on the edge, I'm looking back in Maybe I should just check in

(Don't do it) (But look how it shines) (Don't do it) (But look at the lines) It's a siren song playing in the palm of my hand

It's a beautiful light and it's easy to follow Even if the middle is a little bit hollow I'm standing on the edge, I'm looking back in Maybe I should just check in

(Just check in) (One more time) (Maybe I should just check in)
