Bring It With Me

Closing an album that opened with compulsive urgency and cracked mirrors, ‘Bring It With Me’ has a specific job to do, and it does it with more subtlety than you might expect. STAB takes a genuine left turn here, trading the jangly attack you might expect for something closer to a midtempo meditation, and it pays off. The track has more forward motion than it lets on, but the production keeps everything spacious and warm, letting lines like ‘I trust the part of me that returns / the part that stays soft / the part that stays open’ land with real weight rather than sentiment. The chorus hook, ‘I can bring it with me,’ builds through layered harmonies that lift the whole thing the way a late-period Sheryl Crow chorus does, effortless and earned. In standalone terms it is a dependable cut that reveals range; in context it is the right ending, quieter and more assured than the record that preceded it, the sound of someone who has moved through everything the first fourteen tracks described and chosen to carry it gently rather than outrun it.

Lyrics

Same world Different grip (mm)

I'm back in the traffic, back in the errands Back in the little modern swarm But something's different in my chest Like I've got a quieter center keeping me warm I still get pulled, I still get tempted I still feel that old quick itch But now I can feel it happening And that small noticing is the switch

I'm not running away from life I'm just showing up slower I can carry a little silence Like a hand on my shoulder The noise can do what noise does I don't have to join the fight I'll take the calm with me and keep it close - I can bring it with me

I think of Thoreau by the pond Not as a saint - just a guy making a point That your attention is your life And you don't get a refund if you disappoint I think of Emerson saying trust yourself And I finally hear it as a practice, not a slogan I trust the part of me that returns The part that stays soft The part that stays open

I'm not running away from life I'm just showing up slower I can carry a little silence Like a hand on my shoulder The noise can do what noise does I don't have to join the fight I'll take the calm with me and keep it close - I can bring it with me

So if you see me quiet at a party Or staring out the window on the train I'm not lost, I'm not judging I'm just practicing again I'm listening for the real world Under the static and the spin Because it's always been here Waiting To begin

I'm not running away from life I'm just showing up slower I can carry a little silence Like a hand on my shoulder The noise can do what noise does I don't have to join the fight I'll take the calm with me and keep it close - I can bring it with me
