Needles and Pens moves at a brisk clip in a major key through ten distinct sections in just over four minutes, each one a small conversation between instruments. The arrangement deploys fretless bass, hand-percussion-inflected drums, acoustic piano, and alto saxophone in what reads as a live-room session where nobody decided in advance who would lead; instead, they listen, respond, trade lines. There’s a sweeping filter moment around the two-minute mark that lets a lead synth rise above the ensemble, and that kind of textural surprise re-energizes the record after Motors Down’s slow dissolution. Ambitious but scaled to human breath, complex but never opaque, it does its job and does it well as the album gathers itself toward the finish.
