Wenge

Arriving at the album’s midpoint, ‘Wenge’ shifts from waltz time into a funk-blues strut and the change lands with real impact. At a steady groove in a bright major key, the track locks into a head-nodding rhythm that the album has been building toward without telegraphing. The rhythm section sits back just enough to give the lead guitar room to stretch, and the guitar work moves through the eleven sections with the kind of melodic confidence you hear in early SRV or a loose, live-feeling Robben Ford set, each phrase answering the last rather than just showing off. After five tracks that were variously minor-key, waltz-driven, or reflective, this is the album’s first full turn toward open-air groove, and it feels like a release valve.
