Past The Gates
The manufactured grievance of the last track becomes a mob, and Rose builds an insurrection in real time: news feeds clipped and overlapping, a baritone negotiator working on the man who reads the count, a shouted mob refrain of “Past the gates!” over pounding barrier percussion in F# minor, all of it charging at a hardcore-punk clip. The through-composed structure refuses pop symmetry on purpose, and it earns its restlessness; the shift into 7/8 for the standoff (“Stand back / We own the building”) lands as genuine disorientation rather than showing off. The masterstroke sits dead center, when everything cuts out for a plain contralto reciting the domestic ordinary: “Four children ate at half past one / One left the crust beside the plate.” That single verse, the wiped milk, the refused winter shoes, the television turned down while the doors are stormed, does more work than the entire riot around it, letting Rose set catastrophe against the small logistics of a Tuesday. It shares some DNA with the theatrical dread of Bowie’s Outside or Nine Inch Nails at their most narrative. At five and a half minutes and this dense, it demands a full sit; the wall of processed, tightly compressed sound can bury the finer lines on first pass. But the closing chorus turning the mechanism inward, “They won the thing they wanted / By breaking the mechanism,” then the flat “Now turn it off,” is chilling in exactly the way he intends, and it hands the next track its command. A grower, and one for the listener willing to meet it on its own difficult terms.
Lyrics
Certification begins at noon The final states are called The Vice Steward has arrived Security barriers remain in place
They stole what belongs to you You know what must be done
Past the gates
The count is false The oath is weak The chamber hides The cowards speak The rope is set The doors are near The man inside Must learn our fear
Be strong Be peaceful Be strong
Past the gates
A gate is only iron Until enough hands push A gate is only law Until the law grows soft A gate is only a gate Until enough men call it a door
Stand back
We own the building
Stand back
We paid your wage
Stand back
You work for Doctor Or you work against the state
Past the gates
Do the right thing
The right thing is already written
Then read it differently
I cannot change the count
You can change what happens To the man who reads it
The oath is not to you
Every oath is to whoever Can collect it
Break the glass Take the desk Find the papers Name the rest Break the seal Break the rail Break the room The count has failed Take the chamber Take the chair Drag the old agreement there Past the gates Past the gates Past the—
Four children ate at half past one One left the crust beside the plate The youngest spilled a glass of milk I wiped it before it reached the grate I packed the blue coat for the girl The boy refused his winter shoes The television showed the doors I turned it down and served the fruit No one in the kitchen asked If government would last the day The driver waited by the curb The children had a lesson at three
The chamber cannot certify While armed men occupy the floor
Then there is no certified result
Exactly
We broke the gate We broke the count We broke the oath We threw it out
The people have spoken
No final vote was completed
The people have spoken
The lawful successor—
There is no lawful successor Without the count
Past the gates Past the oath Past the vote they thought they owned Past the chair Past the line Past the place where power changed Past the rules Past the shame Past the country’s former name Past the gates Past the gates Breaking was the point
Do not call this a riot As though the movement lost control The movement found its purpose They did not break the mechanism While trying to win They won the thing they wanted By breaking the mechanism
Now turn it off
