Overture
From Outlandia
Overture
As an opening statement, “Overture” tells you exactly what kind of record you’re holding: theatrical, unsettled, willing to weaponize a brass fanfare. It runs on that five-note fanfare and a pipe organ, then keeps yanking the rug, the stately E-minor 4/4 giving way to the crooked lurch of the 6/8 sections, calliope and distorted guitar colliding like a parade float that’s come off its rails. The genius is in the phrasing of the slogans, “One nation under management / One future under seal,” clipped and cheerful in a way that lands harder than any shout could. Rose (and the full ensemble he conjures here) builds the whole thing toward that final drop, where the bombast cuts out and a ticking pulse carries “Everything is yours - on borrowed time” into the whispered “Doctor, doctor, close your eyes,” a music-box coda that reframes everything before it and, it turns out, seeds a motif this album will return to at its very end. It’s dense, more spectacle than song, and the sheer scale means the emotional intimacy Rose is known for gets a little buried under the pageantry. But as scene-setting goes, this holds the room and dares you to keep listening.
Lyrics
Outlandia, shoulders back Hold the pose and hide the crack Chin up high and banners spread Mind the paint above your head
From Madhatin’s silver towers To the pines that teach us power
Every child receives the claim Every building bears the name
The greatest country that ever lived Certified gold for the privileged Perfect soil and perfect blood Pay no mind beneath the mud
Buy the flag Bless the deal Sign below Make it real
One nation under management One future under seal
Outlandia, take your place Every mirror shows your face If the facts refuse the plan Build another where they stand
Mm - mm Mm - mm Mm - mm - mm
A woman warms a bottle A driver clears the gate A father names an infant For the man he must create
Greatest Cleanest Richest Best Measure every beating chest Greatest Strongest First in line Everything is yours -
- on borrowed time Doctor Doctor Close your eyes
