At the album’s midpoint sits its strongest hand: a courtroom procedural set to a dry, funk-inflected pulse in G minor, built on typewriter clicks, stamps, and a bassline that never stops working. Everything the record has been building, the manufactured man, the doctrine of winning without truth, the sealed floor, converges here into pure mechanism. Rose stages the whole thing as call-and-response: the baritone as Doctor Slump barks orders while a clipped lawyer ensemble answers in bureaucratic shorthand, and the genius of it is how the workers keep breaking through with the human ledger, “My hands broke out” met flatly with “Not in the record.” The chorus lands its hook on pure legal cruelty, “The water’s clean by legal proof,” and Rose keeps twisting the knife across each pass until “The water never held a stain.” The turn everyone will remember comes near the four-minute mark, when the whole apparatus drops out for Nanny’s quiet verse over sparse piano: “I bought two jugs with household cash / And wrote them down as office glass,” a small domestic lie that carries more weight than the entire boardroom, the witness’s most quietly damning entry yet. The bright, almost cheerful synth texture rubbing against such a bleak story is a deliberate provocation, closer to the deadpan menace of early Talking Heads than to anything you’d call protest music, and the flat final line, “It never happened,” is a perfect kill. A standout, and the boldest swing on the record.
