It's Just Crazy

“People like crazy,” Neo-Cons signed off, and this track builds the whole rally on it: a demagogue’s operating manual set to garage-revival organ-rock, in G minor at a hard-charging clip. A high-baritone lead who names the grievance, tells the joke, then hands the crowd its lines, while a supporter ensemble answers on cue. The genius is structural, the way the pre-choruses shrink into clipped commands (“Name them / Shame them / Make it repeat”) and Verse 3 collapses into pure call-and-response, the crowd finishing the leader’s sentences before he can. Donin’s bass-baritone recitative, “Persuasion asks the listener / to compare what he has heard. / Activation gives the listener / a task before the next word,” is the thesis stated plainly, and it lands like the moment the curtain drops on the whole trick. If there’s a cost, it’s that the sheer density of ideas can outrun a first listen; this one rewards you the third time through, once you catch that the hook itself, “Crazy sounds true in a room,” is diagnosing the very thing it’s doing to you. A near-five-minute one-act play that never loses its footing, closing on the quietest, coldest line of all: “The one they cannot leave / without losing themselves.” It holds the room, uneasily, which is exactly the point.

Some people say your plan is reckless Some people say your numbers fail Some people say—

Some people need a larger station And a better kind of mail

They tell you work a little harder While they move the factory south They tell you nothing can be done Then fine the words inside your mouth They call you angry when you notice Call you stupid when you ask They call the doors of power public Then charge admission at the back

Name the grievance Tell the joke Choose an enemy Clear your throat Make a promise Make it tall If they check it Blame them all

Crazy sounds true in a room When everybody answers so soon Say it once, they call it strange Say it twice, the walls have changed Crazy sounds true in a room Put a target in the tune Give the anger somewhere to go Then tell the people what they know

Your mayor sold the parking meters Your schools replaced the books with screens Your neighbor got the better driveway Your cousin’s boss is overseas The experts laugh behind their folders The anchors smile and call you tense I may not know the proper answer But I know who did this to you

Who

The people laughing

Who

The people counting

Who

The people telling you Your eyes require correcting

Grievance Joke Enemy Boast Promise Lie Give it a toast Name them Shame them Make it repeat Put one short sentence Under their feet

Crazy sounds true in a room When everybody answers so soon Say it once, they call it strange Say it twice, the walls have changed Crazy sounds true in a room Put a target in the tune Give the anger somewhere to go Then tell the people what they know

Persuasion asks the listener To compare what he has heard Activation gives the listener A task before the next word Do not seek the greater number Seek the smaller number That requires you To remain itself

I said the judges hate your children

They hate our children

I said the papers hide the count

They hide the count

I said the country needs a doctor

Doctor! Doctor

I said—

We know

You know

We know

Who made you small

They did

Who makes you tall

You do

Who gets the country

We do

Who is “we”

You

Crazy sounds true in a room When everybody answers so soon Say it once, they call it strange Say it twice, they speak your name Crazy sounds true in a room No one asks what it will do Give the anger somewhere to go Then let the answer run the show

Doctor Doctor Tell us what we know Doctor Doctor Give us where to go

A party seeks agreement A movement seeks identity

Which one wins

The one they cannot leave Without losing themselves
