Dear Leader

The genius of “Dear Leader” is that it never winks at you, and arriving this deep into the record, after the regime has silenced Ashes mid-word, its sincerity is almost unbearable. Anna is twelve, she checks her spelling twice, and she means every word: that sincerity, delivered in a bright child’s voice over upright piano, glockenspiel and pizzicato strings at a gentle pace in G major, is exactly what makes the skin crawl. Rose builds the whole thing as a school recital, and the arrangement plays it straight, the recorders and classroom harmonies leaning warmer and prettier just as the lyrics turn most chilling: “His windows have been painted white / His dog still waits beside the curb.” The pre-chorus works like a catechism, “One clear voice / One clear rule,” and the hook lands its awful comfort on “Someone watches, someone knows.” What keeps this from being a mere concept-piece stunt is the restraint. Where a lesser writer would reach for menace or a horror-choir cliche, Rose lets the fanfare interlude and the teacher’s clipped “Again from measure five” carry the dread by implication. The closing contralto coda, flat and retrospective, is the masterstroke: “She was not hiding any message. / She believed each word she wrote.” It denies you the relief of irony, and shows the machinery of the whole album has now reached the children. At nearly five minutes the middle verse runs a touch long before the bridge reclaims the tension, but that is a small thing against how completely the trick works. This is Randy Newman’s cruel civility crossed with a grade-school pageant, and it earns its late place on the record.

Today’s assignment Write a letter To the man who keeps us safe Use your finest handwriting Include the date Remember gratitude Dear Leader My name is Anna I am twelve years old today I attend Continuance School In Residential Zone Eight My teacher says you read our letters He says every child is heard So I checked my spelling twice And used my very neatest words Thank you for the quiet streets And doors that lock at half past six Thank you for the hallway cameras They report when something slips Thank you for the Red Shirt crossing guard He knows each student’s face He asks where Mother plans to go So no one gets misplaced One clear voice One clear rule One safe road From home to school One true screen One daily word Nothing false Is ever heard Dear Leader, I am happy Everything is where it goes Dear Leader, I am happy Someone watches, someone knows Every morning has instructions Every question has a key Dear Leader, I am happy Thank you for remembering me Grandma says there used to be A dozen channels after supper People argued over facts And children heard opposing answers That sounds noisy That sounds lonely How could anyone decide Now the evening news is simple And the borders stay outside We used to have more countries On the classroom map, they say But our new one is much cleaner All the colors match today One clear voice One clear rule One safe road From home to school One true screen One daily word Nothing false Is ever heard Dear Leader, I am happy Everything is where it goes Dear Leader, I am happy Someone watches, someone knows Every morning has instructions Every question has a key Dear Leader, I am happy Thank you for remembering me
