From Model Man

Status

The dashboard framing lands right where the album needs it, a man auditing his life like a readout after ‘Work’ left him clocking in and still not working. The female voice answers each ‘Status?’ with clinical readouts, nominal, clear, steady, while the meter ticks along at a brisk clip in a minor key. That deadpan cataloging in verse one, ‘a dog we filed under family,’ sets up the gut-punch bridge, ‘I mounted the needle myself, and still / I’ve flinched at the reading since birth,’ which is Rose at his most quietly self-implicating. The Canterbury machinery works for it, the interlocking unison building and the glockenspiel-flecked pulse selling the anxiety better than any straight rocker could, and the explosive climb out of the bridge before it collapses into that fading ‘unknown, unknown’ is the arrangement earning its keep. Its repeated chorus wears a touch thin across three passes, but the idea is sharp and it commits all the way.

Lyrics

Status

A wife, a job, a second key a house with a number by the door a dog we filed under family two kids, and expecting one more

Somewhere a needle's watching me counting the boxes one by one Admired or ignored — which will it be Ranked before the day's begun

Status? (nominal) Status? (clear) Every gauge reads where it should Status? (steady) Nothing here — so why do I feel misunderstood

The office ran a five-K once charity bibs, a starting gun I dropped back before the last turn came — left in the dust before it was done

Status? (nominal) Status? (clear) Every gauge reads where it should Status? (steady) Nothing here — so why do I feel misunderstood

Nobody built me this dashboard Nobody wired it to know my worth I mounted the needle myself, and still I've flinched at the reading since birth

Status? (nominal) Status? (clear) Every gauge reads where it should Status? (steady) Nothing here — so why do I feel misunderstood

Status? (unknown) Status? (unknown) Status?
