From Model Man

Default Settings

The conceit here is cold-blooded and Rose knows it: a birth described as a factory intake report, “A paper tag pinned to the crate / Stamped ‘as expected’ with a smile.” It’s the perfect entry point for a record built around manuals, models, and factory defaults, laying down the metaphor the whole album will keep turning over. The Canterbury-scene machinery does the emotional work the deadpan vocal refuses to, all interlocking organ and Rhodes clicking along at a brisk clip in a minor key, and that mid-song guitar break bursts the clinical spell open just when the wryness starts to calcify. The best line is the quietest one, the bridge admission that “I was already running / the second I opened my eyes,” which turns the whole software-metaphor gag into something that actually stings. A clever machine that earns its wit; it lands cleanly and sets the terms.

Lyrics

They clocked the hour, they logged the weight Counted fingers, closed the file A paper tag pinned to the crate Stamped "as expected" with a smile

Down the hall some other kid came in loud and came in bent screaming everything he did while they smoothed me, called it meant

Default settings — before a name they kept the box but lost the guide No one checked if I'd turn out the same and called it me, though it lied

They wheeled me past the nursery floor and drove me somewhere I'd call home No one had met me there before — just someone's son, already grown

Default settings — before a name they kept the box but lost the guide No one checked if I'd turn out the same and called it me, though it lied

Nobody reads the settings twice Nobody thinks to ask them why I was already running the second I opened my eyes

Default settings — before a name they kept the box but lost the guide No one checked if I'd turn out the same and called it me, though it lied
