Where ‘Accessories’ kept the marriage lacquered over, ‘Cast’ finally lets the throw land, and the pun in the title does double duty: a household reduced to a cast playing “parts we used to mean,” and the die already thrown. It opens flat and close-miced, at a slow burn in a minor key, a deadpan baritone counting the damage room by room, and then the chorus detonates into a wall of distorted guitar and gang doubles, that quiet-to-loud swing doing the emotional work the vocal refuses to do out loud. The breakdown is where it earns its keep: “I threw first. I know that,” spoken plain, followed by that devastating quoted line, “He’s the perfect combination, you, and my father,” and then the room goes quiet in a way the arrangement actually honors. That returning father, threaded through ‘Recipe’ and ‘Status,’ pays off here as a curse handed down. Few of Rose’s confessions this year have the structural nerve to let the loudest moment sit next to the most naked one. A highlight, and it lands cleanly.
