Rose builds ‘Entraining’ around one of physics’ quieter miracles: the way two oscillating things, left close enough, eventually fall into sync. In 3/4 time at a patient 117 BPM, the song itself does exactly that, a fretless bass and breathy vocal circling each other until they settle into the same groove. The lyric earns its central image steadily, moving from clocks and tides to a bow making an untouched string vibrate in sympathy, before landing where it always meant to: ‘I watched you sleep / and my breath / found the rise and fall of yours.’ That line does the work quietly, the way the best lines do. A standout cut.
